Executive function in early childhood: Longitudinal measurement invariance and developmental change.

Psychological Assessment - Vol 22, Iss 2
This study tested the longitudinal measurement invariance and developmental changes of a newly developed battery of executive function (EF) tasks for use in early childhood. The battery was administered in the Family Life Project—a prospective longitudinal study (N = 1,292) of families who were oversampled from low-income and African American families at the birth of a new child—at assessments conducted when the child was 3, 4, and 5 years old. All 6 individual EF tasks exhibited strong measurement invariance over time. The EF battery, which was derived from the 6 individual tasks, exhibited partial strong invariance over time. Second-order latent growth curve models revealed individual differences in the levels but not rates of change in latent EF ability. The functional form of change was nonlinear; 60% of the total change in EF ability that was observed between the 3- and 5-year assessments occurred between the Year 3 and Year 4 assessments. Results are discussed with respect to the importance of establishing scalable measures of EF ability prior to investigating experiences that predict or are predicted by changes in EF during early childhood. Construct validity and case validity in assessment.

Psychological Assessment - Vol 22, Iss 2
Clinical assessment relies on both construct validity, which focuses on the accuracy of conclusions about a psychological phenomenon drawn from responses to a measure, and case validity, which focuses on the synthesis of the full range of psychological phenomena pertaining to the concern or question at hand. Whereas construct validity is grounded in understanding causal influences of a distinct phenomenon on responses to various measures and life contexts, case validity encompasses the joint influences of multiple phenomena on individuals' responses. Two sets of distinctions essential to understanding psychological phenomena, hence to understanding construct validity, are (a) implicit and explicit versions of personality constructs and (b) ability and personality as versions of constructs measured by performance tests presenting maximal and typical conditions, respectively. Since both implicit and explicit versions of constructs interface with maximal or typical performance conditions, case validity requires systematic inclusion of these distinctions in assessment protocols. Determining the number of factors to retain in an exploratory factor analysis using comparison data of known factorial structure.

Psychological Assessment - Vol 22, Iss 2
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is used routinely in the development and validation of assessment instruments. One of the most significant challenges when one is performing EFA is determining how many factors to retain. Parallel analysis (PA) is an effective stopping rule that compares the eigenvalues of randomly generated data with those for the actual data. PA takes into account sampling error, and at present it is widely considered the best available method. We introduce a variant of PA that goes even further by reproducing the observed correlation matrix rather than generating random data. Comparison data (CD) with known factorial structure are first generated using 1 factor, and then the number of factors is increased until the reproduction of the observed eigenvalues fails to improve significantly. We evaluated the performance of PA, CD with known factorial structure, and 7 other techniques in a simulation study spanning a wide range of challenging data conditions. In terms of accuracy and robustness across data conditions, the CD technique outperformed all other methods, including a nontrivial superiority to PA. We provide program code to implement the CD technique, which requires no more specialized knowledge or skills than performing PA. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

Successful training of visual-spatial (Gv) abilities: Meta analysis with implications for STEM fields

Interesting "in press" meta-analysis (over 200 studies) indicating that the training of visual-spatial skills (Gv) can improve Gv abilities (effect size = .47) and the results can generalize beyond the training tasks. Implications for STEM fields suggested.

Reynold's Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS) archive 6-5-12

There have been a number of threads about the RIAS on a couple of listservs in the past year. It happened again today on a neuropsych related listserv. Dr. Cecil Reynolds generously shared 11 different files (book chapters, reviews, a PPT module, articles) related to the RIAS with this particular listserv. I offered to make this post, with a link to all these manuscripts, so that Dr. Reynolds and others would not have to repeat this "request-for-information/send attachment" cycle on listservs.

With Dr. Reynold's permission I have taken all the documents he shared with this particular listserv, added in two additional RIAS related journal article in my archive system, and have put them in a large single zip file that can be downloaded by clicking here. Readers will need to download the file and then unzip it on their hard drive to access all documents.
