On the road again: Boston NASP 2009

I'm on the road again for work-related business. I will be attending and presenting at the 2009 NASP conference in Boston from Feb 23 to March 1.

I don't expect much time to blog...except for possible "push" type FYI posts re: content posted at other blogs.....or...mobile blogging (check out the link.....it is very cool...but, of course, I tend to be a tech nerd)......with pictures of activities, people, etc. at the conference.

I shall return.

CHC COG-ACH research synthesis project: 1-18-09 update and revision

I just posted another update to the on-line PPT SlideShare show that presents my current interpretation of the results of a "CHC cognitive-achievement relations research synthesis" project that I've been working on.   The newest feature is the inclusion of a set of "cheat-sheet" summary slides to be used by assessment professionals to engage in more selective referral-focused cognitive assessments.  These research-to-practice summary slides (click here if you want to see an example) are intended to take the research synthesis results (the first 100 slides....yes...the show has 130 in total and is not yet finished) and make the results practical.

This presentation presents an update of the "CHC COG-ACH correlates research synthesis" project described and hosted at IQ's Corner and IAP. The viewer should first read the background materials regarding this project at these sites (how to access is also included in first slide). The results summarized in this on-line show are part of a manuscript that is in preparation with Barb Wendling and will also serve as the foundation for a mini-skills workshop at the 2009 NASP conference in Boston.

Revisit IQ's Corner to keep abreast of updates.

Assessing cognitive impairment in indigenous Australians: Kimberley instrument

For my friends "down under."  Australian Psychologist article by Smith et al. (2009)Assessing cognitive impairment in Indigenous Australians: Re-evaluation of the Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment in Western Australia and the Northern Territory

Abstract

  • The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA) was initially developed and validated as a culturally appropriate dementia screening tool for older Indigenous people living in the Kimberley. This paper describes the re-evaluation of the psychometric properties of the cognitive section (KICA-Cog) of this tool in two different populations, including a Northern Territory sample, and a larger population-based cohort from the Kimberley. In both populations, participants were evaluated on the KICA-Cog tool, and independently assessed by expert clinical raters blinded to the KICA scores, to determine validity and reliability of dementia diagnosis for both groups. Community consultation, feedback and education were integral parts of the research. For the Northern Territory sample, 52 participants were selected primarily through health services. Sensitivity was 82.4% and specificity was 87.5% for diagnosis of dementia, with area under the curve (AUC) of .95, based on a cut-off score of 31/32 of a possible 39. For the Kimberley sample, 363 participants from multiple communities formed part of a prevalence study of dementia. Sensitivity was 93.3% and specificity was 98.4% for a cut-off score of 33/34, with AUC¼.98 (95% confidence interval: 0.97–0.99). There was no education bias found. The KICA-Cog appears to be most reliable at a cut-off of 33/39.

Update from Dr. Andrew Shanock re: NASP CHC happy hour over on the CHC and NASP listservs.

We will have our lovely CHC Happy Hour soiree at 5:30 on Wednesday 2/25 at Jasper White's Summer Shack, which is right across from the Sheridan. We have a spot reserved by the bar. YAY!!! I need to go somewhere that says SUMMER!!! Man, it's cold here in Albany, NY. Oy!
I just received my CHC T-Shirt and Tote bag from Cafe Press. Looks pretty darn snazzy. My students are already teasing me.

See you there.

LD, RTI, cognitive testing: AGORA course

Interested in expert opinions on the interaction of LD identification, RTI and the role of cognitive testing? Check out the AGORA multi-media course. I participated as one of the talking heads, but receive no royalties [I got a small honorarium]. A copy of the flyer can be found by clicking here. Description is below

  • Attached is a flyer describing a multi-media course on SLD identification that includes coverage of both RTI and Comprehensive Assessment and that culminates in seven best practices principles based on current research. It is 6 hours long and is meant to be delivered in either two, 3-hour, 1/2 day sessions or one, 6-hour, full day session. It is intended to be purchased by districts and to be delivered by someone in district (anyone who volunteers, as there is no skill or knowledge base necessary to be a facilitator). Continuing education credits may be obtained after completing this course. Note that some districts cannot afford to send school personnel to conferences and many districts cannot afford to bring speakers in due to significant budget cuts. This course is very cost effective and can serve to train many professionals in house for a fraction of what it would cost to send them to conferences or bring in a speaker. Finally, this professional development program will enhance any course in assessment or Specific Learning Disability (SLD), in particular, because students are exposed to the research and viewpoints of many leaders on all sides of the SLD identification controversies.

The "intelligent" economic stimulus: IQs Corner ads

The "intelligent" economic stimulus - advertise at IQ's Corner!

Over the past 1+ year I've offered ad space on my blog at bargain rates. At various times I've had 2-3 wise companies utilize this service. Why do I offer ads at this professional blog?

Simple. I LOVE blogging. IQs Corner (and now the sister blog...Tic Toc Talk: The IQ Brain Clock) are real labors of love..and are, more-or-less, hobbies. However, I'm not able to spend as much time as I would like with my blogs. If I had the time I could be posting considerable more material and could add new features. However, blogging comes at the expense of other work, projects, contracts, etc....all that pay the bills. Long story short---If this blog could generate a little "ching" in my pocket, I could then rationalize stealing time from other activities and do more. In return, advertisers would be receiving a bargain...at a top-notch recognized blog (see data below).

The current rate is a bargain (I will send you the information upon request). In the spirit of recovery for our economy, I'm keeping 2009 ad rates at the same rates used during 2008. If you are someone (or an organization) and want to make me a "creative proposal" (multiple ads; more than six months)...then fire away. Contact me at email address provided at the end of this post.

Why should anyone consider advertising on this blog?

A few random pieces of data below:
  • You can't beat the rates. [Or, make me an offer I can't refuse]
  • IQs Corner was mentioned in Scientific American:Mind - and this was quite a while ago, before its web footprint became larger.
  • Your investment should reach a group of readers who are interested in staying abreast of contemporary research in intelligence theories, intelligence testing, educational psychology, school psychology, neuropsychology, special education, and general psychological and educational theory and assessment. As of today, since its birth, IQs Corner's (as reflected by the hit counter) has had almost 1/4 million unique visitors (230,305) and over 400,000 page views (404,774)
  • You would help a great guy keep his hobby going :)

The placement of an ad does not imply endorsement of the advertising company or products by Kevin McGrew, the Institute for Applied Psychometrics, or IQs Corner Blog. It is just a way to try keep this blog hobby viable.

Web footprint: Presence on FIRST page of Google searches

I conducted a number of Google searches on 1-25-09 using the following variety of search terms. Click on each term to see the search results. As you will see, IQ's Corner Blog (this blog), my primary web page (IAP), or IQ's Corner sister blog (IQ Brain Clock) most often showed up on the FIRST page of Google results returned...sometimes the second page. As we know, most people only pay attention to the results of the first page (and sometimes second) from Google searches. Clearly this humble little blog does pop up when people interested in intelligence theory, research, testing, and related topics do searches for information:

NASP CHC Boston happy hour get together

Andrew Shanock has taken the lead in organizing a NASP convention CHC happy hour in Boston. Although he is still researching possible local pubs, he has established a general meeting area (should we call it "g" ?). Below is Andrew's update

  • At the very least we will hold the festivities at the Boston Marriot. We'll start at 5:30 for the festivities. I created new SWAG for CHC. Go to http://www.cafepress.com/CHCboston
  • It can take two weeks to get to you so if you order now, you should have plenty of time to get it in your hands. The logo has CHC and below is "Bridging Abilities to Achievement", then in black letters is "We're taking RtI to a whole new Tier". See what you think. No profit is made from the items. You buy it all from cafe press.
  • If anyone has suggestions as to a close bar/pub by the hotel send me an email. I will send out definite plans by the end of the week.
  • Thanks and look forward to seeing you in Boston
